Bruges: Beer, Chocolate, Waffles, Fries.

I never occurred to me that fries were a Belgian specialty, but they take them very seriously and they do not disappoint.  There's even a potato museum in Bruges.

Katrina and I had spent the morning wandering around Paris and a good chunk of the day traveling, so we were both pretty worn out and under the weather.  That evening, we found a little restaurant a few blocks from our hotel and stared at the menu with zero appetite.  I ordered onion soup to try to knock the chill off my bones and a plate of fries for sustenance.  Our waiter scoffed and rolled his eyes at me.

"Fries do not go with soup," he said after he took Katrina's order.  "Bread goes with soup."

He returned later with our soup and a basket of bread.  No fries for me.

Katrina has hated beer as long as I've known her, so we were all (even the waiter!) pretty excited to find a beer she liked so much.  It tasted like cherry kool-aid.
Oh, Duvel, you are so delicious.

When in Bruges

Grote Markt
Bruges, West Flanders
Belgium
Bruges goes by a few different names - Bruges in French, Brugge in Dutch, Brügge in German.
Whatever you want to call it (or however you want to spell it) it's the capital and largest city of West Flanders, which is the Flemish region of Belgium, up in the northwest.  It has a population of 117,073 (thanks, wikipedia) and, at one time, it was the "chief commercial city" of the world thanks to it's port.

But more importantly, it's really pretty, has eight gazillion chocolate shops, a lot of good beer and so many canals that it's referred to as "the Venice of the North."  It also served as a setting for In Bruges, with Ralph Fiennes and Colin Farrell, and The Nun's Story, with Audrey Hepburn and Peter Finch.

You might be wondering what possessed us to go to Bruges, of all places...

Hotel de Tuilerieen - Bruges, Belgium

May 27, 2012

We took the train into Bruges on Monday and decided against finding our hotel on foot (a very wise decision, as we had the misfortune of learning in Amsterdam).  We hailed a cab outside of the train station - a shiny black car driven by a gray haired man who was delighted to drive two American girls on their first time in Bruges.  After commenting on how heavy my bag was (thank you, video light), he boasted about his city's canal tours, museums and chocolate shops.

Fun Fact: there are fifty chocolate shops in Bruges.  It is not a large city.

Then, he asked us where we were going, and as we said the name of our hotel, his eyes widened.
"Oohh!" he exclaimed. "Fancy girls!  The Tuilerieen is the nicest hotel in Bruges!"

And while I can't make a first hand comparison to the other hotels in Bruges, I'd be willing to bet our taxi driver was correct.

Our first hour in the city was spent excitedly exploring (and documenting) the Tuilerieen.  Our room was massive and beautiful.  Our bed was comfortable.  Our hallway felt like someone's home (albeit, a very wealthy, very stylish someone's home).  There was a spa and a pool, and a very attractive gentleman wandering around in a hotel robe (although I assume that last part wasn't a standard hotel provision).  There was a gorgeous bar.  Autographed photos of celebrities and royals lined the walls of the downstairs lounge (Ralph Fiennes and Colin Farrell probably, definitely, could have, maybe stayed in our bedroom.  No. Big. Deal.).  Even the mints at the counter were exceptional - and I would know, because I had at least twenty of them.

A tour guide later informed us that the hotel's windows are made from Venetian crystal.
Venetian. Crystal.

That being said, if you're going to Bruges, definitely look into staying at the Tuilerieen, and if you're going anywhere else, I recommend naming your own price on Priceline.  I use it every time I need a place to stay and I've had amazing luck with it.

6/8/12

the last few weeks (through Instagram)

I'm home from Europe and, after the last two days of catching up (complete with jet lag), I'm ready for another vacation.  Fortunately, this weekend will be full of fun, sun and friends in the city - just what I need!

I'll be posting some of the thousands (I'm not kidding) of photos I took over the next week or two (or six), and what better place to start than instagram?
